AO3 Workskins, Coding Tricks and Tutorials
Want to have a text conversation coded into your fic so it looks like it's on a phone? Want to have different coloured text, highlighted bits, or a footnote that can send you back to where you were in-text afterwards?
There's code for that!
Simpler things can be done with HTML, others require CSS, and a variety of generous fellow fans have created guides about how to do it.
You can also try the Fanwork Research & Reference Guides AO3 tag for a variety of guides including podficcing for beginners, wordbuilding help and fandom statistics, or individual tags like "HTML" or "CSS" if you're looking for help with a specific coding language.
AO3 Scripts and Skins
You can create or use workskins to make your AO3 works look a specific way, but you can also create or use public AO3 site skins which change your personal AO3 viewing experience (the most well-known skin is Reversi, the AO3 "darkmode").
You can find all public site skins here.
To change or add or remove a site skin, go to archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR USERNAME/skins.
You can also change your AO3 experience by running scripts through a platform like greasemonkey or tampermonkey. These can do things like give you a floating review comment box, blacklist specific tags automatically, or highlight/hide works you have kudosed.
Here are some scripts you might find useful — this is by no means a complete list:
Highlight or hide works you kudosed/marked as seen by Min Replace hitcount with kudos/hits percentage and sort by that by Min Track any filterable listing by Min Highlight in green all creators with a blanket permissions statement by BrickGrass Automatically set your default language to English by Quihi A list of scripts and bookmarklets by Flamebyrd A list of scripts collated by ao3commentoftheday Tuff's scripts, mostly to do with hiding tags, works and users Bookmark manager by Darthkrallt
Please note that to our knowledge these scripts unfortunately don't work if you're in incognito/private mode on your browser.
Fulfilling an Assignment
There are two ways to fulfill an assignment on AO3:
1. Fulfill an assignment through the 'Assignments' page:
To do so, you can either head to the page directly: archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR USERNAME/assignments
Or find it in the dropdown menu, or head to your AO3 profile dashboard (archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR USERNAME) and find it listed in the sidebar.
Once you're there, find the assignment you're posting for, and press the 'Fulfill' button to post a new work.

2. Choosing the assignment when posting a New Work:
Head to the new work page (archiveofourown.org/works/new). Under 'Associations,' you can find your current 'Open Assignments' in the "Does this fulfill a challenge assignment" and choose the corresponding one.

Please make sure to list the collection and giftee in your post.
Posting to a Collection
There are typically two ways to post to a collection:
1. Posting directly to a collection:
To post directly to a collection, head to the collection link. At the top, you can find the button to "Post to Collection." Once you do, it'll take you to the 'New Work' page where you can fill in all the relevant information.

2. Listing the collection when posting a New Work:
Head to the new work page (archiveofourown.org/works/new). Under 'Associations,' you can list the collection you want to post to in the "Post to Collection / Challenges" section.
You can search for the collection by typing in the relevant keywords. To list a collection directly, insert the name used in the URL of the collection (archiveofourown.org/collections/NAME_OF_COLLECTION).

Please note that in certain collections, works have to be approved before they are included.
Here are examples of the collection names for some of our ongoing events and collections (note that our naming format stays the same, so you can use the collection name and change the year to find the right collection):
Gifting a Work
In the 'Associations' section when you post a new work (archiveofourown.org/works/new), insert the username of the individual you're gifting the work to in the "Gift this work to" section.
For Community Gifts works, please insert 'Cap Iron Man Community' as the giftee. (If the name does not appear as a suggestion, you can just press the enter key or comma (,) key to insert the name directly.)

Listing Prompts
Works for Community Gifts, Bingo, Kink Meme — and for other events with open prompt fills — you must list the original prompt in the Summary or Notes (at the beginning or end).
Listing Related Works
For challenges like the Remix or any of our Bangs (Big Bang, Reverse Big Bang, Tiny Reverse Bang), you must list the affiliated work. You can either do so by linking the work directly in your Summary or Notes (at the beginning), or by using AO3's Related Work feature.
To do so, head to the new work page (archiveofourown.org/works/new). Under 'Associations,' you'll see the "This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work" option. Once you check that option, you'll see a form to submit the required information. If the work is already on AO3, you can just insert the URL and AO3 will do the rest of the work for you!

Embedding Images into your Work
Before inserting an image into your work, please note that AO3 does not host images; this means you cannot upload an image directly to AO3. Instead you must upload it elsewhere and retrieve a direct image link once you do. (A direct image URL ends in .jpg, .png, .gif, etc.)
(Tip: We advise using a free image uploading service, such as Imgur or Squidge, or even Wordpress.com's image hosting capacity (please keep in mind that some services do not permit NSFW images or may not allow hosting images for embedding in other sites). You can also host your image on Tumblr by making a new photo post in your drafts. This allows you to host your image and use its URL, while also keeping your work private. We do not advise publishing your artwork as private posts on Tumblr, as at the time of writing, the site can flag public/private posts as sensitive, but not drafts.)
Once you have the link, you can now embed it into the 'Work Text'.
Please note that AO3 now automatically sizes your images so that they fit completely on people's screens - yay! This is a long-awaited update, and means you don't have to worry about resizing your image.
However, if your file size is too large, note that it may not load. To prevent this, resize it before uploading and embedding your work. You can do this in a digital program (Photoshop, Paint on Windows, Preview on Mac, etc.) or through an online photo editor — just make sure to keep your height:width ratio the same.
1. 'Rich Text' Settings

If you work in 'Rich Text' settings, you can click the "Insert/edit image" tool and insert the direct URL to your image into the 'source.'
2. 'HTML' Settings
If you prefer using HTML, you can place a direct url to your image and resize it as needed. If you'd like the image to be scaled as a proportion of the screen size, you may insert width="100%" as the value, or use the code below and replace whatever proportion you'd like instead of 100%:
Finding your Mystery Work in an Unrevealed Collection
Because your work is listed as a 'Mystery Work' when posted to an unrevealed collection, it may be difficult to find it again as it's unlisted in your work page. To find it again, you can:
1. Go to where it is listed:
You'll be able to find your work listed under your statistics page — go to your dashboard and then it's on the left-hand menu (archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR USERNAME/stats). Clicking on the link from that statistics page will take you to the work.
2. Find it in the collection:
You'll also be able to find the work by going into the collection. Your work(s) will be listed with its full information, while all the other works will be seen as 'Mystery Works'. Please note that in certain collections, works have to be approved before they are included; in such cases, you may find your work using the first method (through the statistics page).
Changing the Publication Date of Your Work
For works posted in collections with staggered reveals — meaning the initial posting date of your work will be different from the date it's revealed — we suggest that you update the publication date of your work. By doing so, it will show up in chronological AO3 searches; otherwise, it will show up in searches on the date it was initially posted. Sadly, updating the publication date will not trigger inclusion in automatically generated AO3 feeds.
To set a different publication date, edit the work in question. Under 'Associations,' you'll see the "Set a different publication date" section. By checking it off, you'll be able to alter the publication date to the date the work has been revealed.

More information on this can be found here on AO3, under "set a different publication date." Regrettably, this will not trigger AO3 feeds because of how Archive of Our Own and automatically generated AO3 feeds work.
If you have any questions regarding using AO3 for our events and challenges, please contact the community mods at cap.im.mods@gmail.com or the event mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com.
