Best of Steve/Tony Nominations (Text-Only)

COMICS CATEGORY

Please note: some nominated moments were not included in this list because they were published in canon before the origin of our community (February 19, 2008).

Marvel 616

616-01 : "I'm not half as good at anything as I am when I'm doing it next to you." — Avengers Prime (2010) #5

SR: You were amazing up there. I'm sorry about the things I said before this happened. It's--it's just so hard to put away all the things that happened between us.
TS: All those things...All the things I said and did--I'm--I'm so, so sorry. I know it's not enough, but I hope you will allow me the chance to earn your friendship back. I don't deserve it...I just hope you let me. I'm not half as good at--at anything as I am when I'm doing it next to you. And that's the truth.

Steve and Tony hug and make-up after Civil War during the last issue of Avengers Prime as they both apologize to each other.

616-02 : "This isn't personal." — Avengers (Vol. 4) #9

TS: It isn't personal, Steve. [...] I'm sorry your feelings are hurt.
SR: My feelings?! You think this is about my feelings? [...] We do this, but after that, you're out. You're done. And if something happens here that you have to account for...you're going to. No more favors. No more special treatment. You pay for your sins, Tony. Like everyone else.

Steve snaps at Tony when he discovers that the Illuminati is still in place. As they get into a heated argument, their teammates comment on their relationship, and how much they mean to each other (or used to).

616-03 : One Night in Madripoor — Captain America & Iron Man #634

SR: You all right?
TS: Don't--worry about me. Another couple of minutes and I would've charmed my way out of trouble.

The two of them go on an undercover mission in Madripoor, and things don't go as planned. Tony gets hurt, and Steve holds onto him, worried.

616-04 : "You've got me watching over you." — Captain America & Black Widow #636

TS: Famous last words. But at least you've got me watching over you.
SR: Thanks...but don't think I've forgotten that I was right about Kash. You owe me a steak.
TS: I never back out of a bet. The best steak on the Sizzler's menu is all yours.
SR: Don't knock the Sizzler.
TS: Wouldn't dream of it. Although, to be clear, if I had been right, you would've had to pawn your shield in order to afford the meal you'd be buying. And, if you want, we can go double or nothing on whether or not you sit this one out.
SR: You're on.

As Steve goes on a mission alone, he has Tony on the comms for assistance, and they can't help but playfully banter and make bets (and plan a steak dinner date).

616-05 : "Wake up, old man." — Avengers (Vol. 5) #1

TS: So...this idea has been running through my mind. It's overwhelming--all-consuming--and I can't shut it off. The exact same thing happened the day we found you.
SR: You remember that?
TS: Oh...I remember everything about that day. We started something that mattered. Because of you, the world changed. I changed.

Tony wakes up Steve in the middle of the night, entering his bedroom with ease and familiarity, to discuss his ideas for the Avengers World.

616-06 : "We can make this work." — Avengers (Vol 5) #2

SR: Okay...we can make this work.
TS: It has to work. When we engage the mechanism, they have to come.
SR: Greater threats mean greater needs, Tony... They'll come.

Steve and Tony rebuild the Avengers. To quote the nominator: "Here, you see Steve and Tony working off each other, flawlessly. They both bring important elements to the team, both in their skills and their relationships, and without the other, the machine wouldn't happen. And yeah, I know, Tony's lying to Steve while he stares at him with pure love in his eyes, but I find something oddly romantic in the fact that even in betrayal, Tony is still providing something for Steve. It's like the world's most confusing prenup--Tony's already making sure Steve has a family when the divorce comes."

616-07 : "I remember." — Avengers (Vol 5) #29

SR: I remember.
TS: Remember what?
SR: I remember.

Steve discovers Tony's betrayal, and it hurts for both of them.

616-08 : "He loved you." — Civil War II: The Oath (2017)

"I know every thought he had about you, for instance. He loved you. He loved you, and he admired you. Even when you fought. All those times you thought you outsmarted him? Those times you thought you beat him? He had you. Every single time. He could've beaten you, and he chose instead to go easy on you, to spare you. You'd probably smile and say that made him the better man--but I'd say that made him weak."

At the end of Civil War II, 'Captain America' tells a unconscious Tony Stark that "[Steve] loved you. He loved you, and he admired you." and ultimately confirms that Steve's feelings for Tony run deep.

616-09 : "I wanted to save you." — Secret Empire #6

TS: I'm sorry. I know it's not really you in there-- I know it can't be, but-- I still want to say it. When we went to war, and I stood over your body, I knew I hadn't won anything. All I'd done was fail you. I said it then, it wasn't worth it. And when you came back? I told myself I would never make that mistake again. Until I did. Over and over. [...] Just please know-- I wanted to save you so badly. Because I wanted to be to you what you always were to me--my hero. I'm so sorry I keep letting you down, Cap.

A.I. Tony—with Tony's consciousness installed—makes a final apology to Steve while he still can.

Earth-3490

3490-10 : Civil Union — Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #2

Case Study: Earth-3490.

The 47th peaceful model examined benefited primarily from the romantic involvement of Captain America, Steve Rogers and the Iron Man, Natasha Stark. A deterrent to each others' more aggressive behavior, this allowed this Earth's Reed Richards to successfully complete the Superhero Registration Program and begin the Fifty State Initiative.

When Reed Richards look through other universes that have enacted (or attempted to enact) some form of the SHRA, he comes across a world where Steve and Tony avoided the conflict by being romantically involved.

Marvel Adventures

MA-11 : "Let's get that burger." — Marvel Adventures: Avengers #27

SR: Good shot! Now we're tied up.
TS: Only because you spotted me twenty points.
SR:True, but I made you take your armor off. After I win, you want to get a burger somewhere?

While the rest of the team are at the fair, Steve and Tony decide to spend time with each other playing basketball and making plans to grab a bite. They're interrupted by spam callers, then take a break to fight incompetent villains, but are ready to return to their date plans immediately afterwards.

Marvel Ultimate

ULT-12 : "You hang in there Steve. You hear me?" — Ultimatum (2010) #2

TS: You hang in there, Steve. You hear me?
CD: What happened?
TS: What happened? He was drowning. Or he drowned. I don't know. I pulled him out. He was awake. He asked if the rest of the team was okay and...we went looking when he...collapsed. (I could use a drink.)

Tony saves Steve from drowning and desperately gets him to the hospital, crashing through the window and yelling "This man needs medical attention -- now." He then holds onto Steve's shield as he watches him being treated.

ULT-13 : "Are you sure you're okay, Tony?" — Ultimate Avengers Vs. New Ultimates #4

SR: You sure you're okay, Tony?
TS: Honestly, I'm great. A lifetime of alcohol abuse has been perfect training for my oral chemotherapy. Throwing up has always been a big part of my morning routine
SR: Can I at least get you a glass of water?
TS: No, if you just give me a hand up, I'll be fine, Cap. My legs are a little shaky, but otherwise I'm as good as I've ever been.

Steve stays by Tony's side as he's sick and helps him however he can.

ULT-14 : "You're not going." — Cataclysm: Ultimates' Last Stand # 2

TS: I'm going in.
SR: You?
TS: Of course it has to be me. [...] We don't have time for this. I'm going.
SR: Tony...you're not going.
TS: You're right.

Tony was insistent on visiting Earth-616, despite his team's objections. Steve speaks up and tells him not to go, and Tony promptly agrees.

Marvel 1872

1872-15 : "Oh Danny boy." — 1872 #1

TS: Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling!
SR: Not tonight, Stark!

Tony sings to Steve to get his attention, and Steve seems like he's used to be serenaded by him. He then realizes that Tony's in trouble and comes to his rescue.

1872-16 : "My coffin." — 1872 #2-3

RW: Stark? What the hell are you wearing?
TS: My coffin.

After Steve's death, Tony sobers up and risks his life to protect the town, as Steve would have wanted.

CINEMA CATEGORY

MCU-01 : "Put on the suit." — The Avengers

SR: You’re not going alone!
TS: You gonna stop me?
SR: Put on the suit, let’s find out.
TS: I’m not afraid to hit an old man.
SR: Put on the suit.

SR: Put on the suit!
TS: Yep!

Steve and Tony try to provoke each other into a fight, but set aside their differences when there are more important things at stake. Steve gets very handsy while helping Tony up and out of the room.

MCU-02 : "Please tell me nobody kissed me." — The Avengers

MCU-03 : "You haven’t seen it yet." — Avengers: Age of Ultron

SR: "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." Pulled us apart like cotton candy.
TS: Seems like you walked away all right.
SR: Is that a problem?
TS: I don't trust a guy without a dark side. Call me old fashioned.
SR: Well, let’s just say you haven’t seen it yet.

Steve and Tony chop wood and have a very charged disagreement.

MCU-04 : "Together." — Avengers: Age of Ultron

TS: How were you guys planning on beating that?
SR: Together.
TS: We’ll lose.
SR: Then we’ll do that together, too.

In the final battle against Ultron, Tony references to what Steve told him earlier: that they can do this, together.

After some playful bantering inside the compound, Steve and Tony have a personal conversation with each other before saying their goodbyes.

MCU-06 : "We need you." — Captain America: Civil War

SR: I don’t mean to make things difficult.
TS: I know, because you’re a very polite person.
SR: If I see a situation pointed south… I can’t ignore it. Sometimes I wish I could.
TS: No, you don’t.
SR: No, I don’t. Sometimes…
TS: Sometimes I wanna punch you in your perfect teeth. But I don’t wanna see you gone. We need you, Cap.

Tony pleads to Steve one more time before they fight, his voice cracking as he tells Steve, "I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart."

MCU-08 : "So was I." — Captain America: Civil War

SR: He's my friend.
TS: So was I.

The heartbreaking moment when Steve breaks Tony's reactor with his shield, then leaves it with Tony.

MCU-09 : "I'll be there." — Captain America: Civil War

Tony,

I’m glad you’re back at the compound, I don’t like the idea of you rattling around a mansion by yourself. We all need family. The Avengers are yours, maybe more so than mine. I’ve been on my own since I was 18. I never really fit in anywhere – even in the Army. My faith is in people, I guess. Individuals. And I’m happy to say for the most part, they haven’t let me down. Which is why I can’t let them down either. Locks can be replaced, but – maybe they shouldn’t. I know I hurt you Tony. I guess I thought – by not telling you about your parents I was sparing you, but… I can see now I was really sparing myself. I’m sorry. Hopefully one day you can understand. I wish we agreed on the Accords, I really do. I know you were only doing what you believe in, and that’s all any of us can do, it’s all any of us should. So no matter what, I promise if you — if you need us. If you need me, I’ll be there.

Steve

Despite what happened, Steve makes a promise to Tony — if Tony needs him, he'll be there.

ANIMATED CATEGORY

Earth's Mightiest Heroes

EMH-01 : "I choose to believe in you, Iron Man." — Earth's Mightiest Heroes (2.19): Emperor Stark

TS: And everything Purple Man had me do, was all inside me. They were all ideas I had. I'm supposed to be the futurist, working to build a better tomorrow. What I did, is that the future I've been working for?
SR: I don't believe that. [...] I know you believe in the future, but I believe in people. And I choose to believe in you, Iron Man.

In the aftermath of the Purple Man's influence over Tony, he shares with Steve his insecurities. Steve reassures Tony that he's a hero, and Steve believes in him.

Avengers Assemble

AA-02 : Humbled and Impressed — Avengers Assemble (1.6): Super Adaptoid

TS: Okay, what a second. So explain to me again how you memorized all our moves without the aid of a single machine.
SR: You just wouldn't understand good old-fashioned human ingenuity.
TS: Maybe. Maybe not. But I'd be willing to learn. Humbled and impressed in one day. I think I hate today.
SR: Impressed by this? It's just something I whipped up on my handy dandy Starkpad.

Steve sasses Tony, they get competitive, and they grow to respect each other and their viewpoints by the end of the episode. Bonus: Steve never misses an issue of Futura!

AA-03 : Mutual Appreciation Society — Avengers Assemble (1.13): In Deep

TS: But with my armor gone, all I can do is improvise. Steve, even without your shield, you're still Captain America. Without my armor, I'm just...
SR: Tony Stark! The Tony Stark. Billionaire genius. You're probably one of the three smartest men in the entire world. You're as tough as they come. You invented hardcore. The Avengers are lucky you're on our side.

Steve and Tony go undercover on a mission, and have a heart-to-heart about how great they think the other man is while hiding inside a vent. When they return to the team, they admit that they've learned from each other during the mission, and Clint asks, "So, like, are you pals going to hug now or what?"

AA-04 : Each Other's Hero — Avengers Assemble (2.7): The Age of Tony Stark

TS: Cap, I'm scared.
SR: No need to be, son.
TS: Easy for you to say. You're a big, brave superhero!
SR: I was brave long before I was Captain America. And Tony Stark was a hero long before he was Iron Man.

Tony gets de-aged young and younger as the episode goes on, and a young Tony admits to Steve that he's scared. Steve reassures him that everything will be alright, and Tony pulls the time stone out of his reactor as the two hug. Later, Tony admits to Steve that Captain America inspired him when he was young: "The past can teach us things. Like what being a hero is."

AA-05 : "You think you know my pal Cap better than I do?" — Avengers Assemble (3.3): Saving Captain Rogers

SR: I want to honor my past, not live there. [...] I've always had friends I could count on. It's nice to know I still do.
TS: You always will. Although as a friend, I gotta tell you, this room would look a lot better with a couple of touchscreens. Maybe a TV in the corner? [...] Okay, okay. Hear me out. What about an ice cream machine? I know butter pecan is your favorite.
SR: Isn't it everybody's?

Tony spends most of the episode worrying about Steve and insisting that he knows Steve the best. When he thinks he hears a cry of pain in the distance, he says, furiously, "If that's Cap, I'm gonna glue my fist to Zemo's face." But they end up safe and sound back in Steve's room by the end of the episode.

AA-06 : Best Friends Across Time and Space — Avengers Assemble (3.26): Avengers Revolution

SR: Tony, you've been the best friend I've had since...Well, maybe ever.
TS: I like to think I work best alone, Cap. But the truth is, I'm better because you're my friend.

Steve and Tony say goodbye to each other one last time before they're separated across time and space, but not before letting the other know how much they mean to them.

AA-07 : The Tony Stark He Knows and Loves — Avengers Assemble (4.1): Avengers No More

SR: Is all the glitz and glamor really necessary?”
TS: No one’s going to believe it’s me unless it’s louder and bigger than anything else.
SR: Even trapped across infinite dimensions, you are still Tony Stark.

Steve smiles when Tony is the same as ever, even across dimensions.

AA-08 : The Lift and Spin Reunion — Avengers Assemble (4.17): Beyond

TS: Well, I guess we should --
SR: I don't believe it!
TS: Woah, okay. All right. All right.
ST: Iron Man in the flesh!

Tony was presumed dead by the Avengers until he shows up again, alive and well, and Steve rushes to hug Tony as they reunite after the long separation.

Iron Man and Captain America: Heroes United

HU-09 : "I'm gonna need a long shower when we're done with this mission." — Iron Man and Captain America: Heroes United

SR: Oh, what? You don’t like my plan?
TS: It’s just a little too "me".
SR: Come on, it’s well thought out. And it’s the last thing Red Skull would expect. I figured the wild man in you would love it.
TS:
SR: This is the quietest you’ve ever been. What’re you up to back there?
TS: I’m not saying. Just in case Skull still has some control over your brain.
SR: You really think I’d turn on you?
TS: Probably not, but I like surprises, so I’m working on a back-up plan just in case yours doesn’t work.
SR: Wow, strategy from Iron Man?
TS: What can I say, you’re rubbing off on me. Maybe I’ll earn a merit badge.

Steve and Tony make a bet, snark with each other throughout the movie, strip in an elevator while they're alone, and acknowledge how much they've rubbed off on each other.

GAMING CATEGORY

AvAc-01 : "I like you." — Avengers Academy: Vote for Cap! (Mission)

SR: I like you Tony, but don't ever disrespect the election process.
TS: I like you too, Cap, but by now you should know that I pretty much disrespect everything.

Early in their relationship, despite not getting along, Tony still helps Steve campaign for Class President.

AvAc-02 : "Because you're absurdly good-looking." — Avengers Academy: Put In Work (Mission)

SR: Why does everyone think I know anything about girls?
TS: Because you're absurdly good-looking, and you're going out with a model. Quit being all shy about it.

Tony asks Steve for dating advice, but not without complimenting him on his looks as he usually does.

AvAc-03 : "Tony Stark?! Tony Stark..." — Avengers Academy: Birds of a Feather (Mission)

BM: I'm glad Tony told me I should trust you.
SR: Tony Stark?!
BM: He said you're the most trustworthy person on campus. And the most boring.
SR: Tony Stark...

Mockingbird tells Steve that Tony thinks "[Steve is] the most trustworthy person on campus." Steve is shocked by this, but then says Tony's name with awe.

AvAc-04 : "[I'm] lucky to have [you] around." — Avengers Academy: Armor Wars Event

SR: Why did you make this for me?
TS: I don't know. I was bored I guess. Apparently, I won't be happy until every single person I meet has a personalized flying suit of armor.
SR: Well, thank you. I appreciate it. It'll help protect me against our armored enemies, even if that isn't why you did it.
TS: I can't have one of those knockoff scientists taking down Captain America. That's my job.
SR: And again, I have to wonder why we're like this...
TS: Don't worry about it. All that matters is that I'm perfect, and you're lucky to have me around.
SR: I don't know if I agree with the first part, but I guess I can agree with the second.
TS: As long as we both can agree that I'm always right.

Tony makes Steve an armor, and acts like it's no big deal. But Steve appreciates it (a lot).

CoC-05 : Reparation and Atonement — Contest of Champions: Civil War Event

CW SR: Tony, listen... In the universe I come from, I got to see what happens if our conflict goes too far. I saw you die by my own hands. I know you're not the same Tony as in my own reality. But I never had the chance to apologize, so I'll take what I can get. I'm sorry.
TS: Hey man, no sweat. Just don't kill me again, and we're good.

In Marvel's Contest of Champion promotional description: "As the Civil Warrior, Captain America dons Stark Tech armor and vows to stop senseless future conflict." Civil Warrior is a version of Steve who witnessed Tony's death during Civil War, and devotes his existence to repentance and atonement.
